A Lagos-based Biology teacher, Busayo Adeyemo, has emerged as the winner of the 2026 Maltina Teacher of the Year competition.

Adeyemo teaches at Lanre Awolokun High School in Gbagada, Lagos State. She received the top award at the competition’s grand finale in Lagos on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Her prize package includes ₦10 million in cash, a brand-new Honda HR-V and an overseas training opportunity. She will also receive a one-year supply of Maltina.

The recognition extends beyond the teacher herself. Her school will receive a ₦30 million infrastructure project, while Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised her a three-bedroom flat.

Teacher Beats Thousands to Win National Award

Adeyemo emerged as the overall winner after a nationwide competition that attracted thousands of educators.

According to reports, organisers received 2,510 entries from across Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory. Of these, 2,243 were considered valid.

The selection process included assessments and physical screening. Ten finalists eventually competed for the national award.

The competition recognises teachers who demonstrate excellence in their profession and make meaningful contributions to students’ learning.

The overall winner’s prize package includes several rewards designed to recognise her achievements and support her professional development.

Adeyemo received ₦10 million and a brand-new Honda HR-V. She will also participate in an overseas capacity-building programme to further develop her teaching skills.

In addition, she will receive Maltina products for one year.

The competition’s organisers will fund a ₦30 million infrastructure project at her school. This investment is expected to extend the benefits of her achievement to students and the wider school community.

Reports also indicate that Adeyemo won an additional ₦1.5 million after being named the competition’s Best STEM Teacher.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a separate reward for Adeyemo in recognition of her achievement.

The governor promised to provide her with a three-bedroom flat. The announcement added another major reward to the package she received from the competition’s organisers.

Sanwo-Olu also praised the organisers for recognising teachers and supporting education.

He stressed the importance of investing in educators, whose work helps shape the future of students and the country.

Other Teachers Also Receive Cash Prizes

Yusuf Cariyat of Wisdom International School of Excellence in Abuja emerged as the first runner-up. He received ₦5 million.

Ephraim Jacob Inyangudo of Comprehensive Secondary School in Akwa Ibom State came third and received ₦3 million.

Seventeen other teachers who emerged as state champions also received ₦1 million each.
