Ayra Starr’s Mother Says Social Media Is Affecting Gen Z’s Ability to Think Independently

Nene Aderibigbe, mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has criticised the growing influence of social media on Generation Z.

She believes many young people now depend too much on other people’s opinions instead of developing their own thoughts.

Aderibigbe also expressed concern about how excessive phone use affects young people’s ability to recognise their talents.

Ayra Starr’s Mother Raises Concerns About Gen Z

Speaking about the issue, Aderibigbe said social media had changed how many young people think.

She argued that some members of Gen Z now rely on opinions they see online rather than forming independent views.

“Social media has just turned a lot of things upside down. They don’t have their own thinking again; it is only people’s thinking they use now,” she said.

She also noted that many young people have natural talents but struggle to recognise their abilities.

According to her, social media influence can distract them from discovering their potential.

She Advises Young People to Take Breaks From Their Phones

Aderibigbe urged young people to spend some time away from their mobile phones.

She recommended taking at least two to three hours away from screens to reflect on personal goals and abilities.

She also encouraged meditation and quiet reflection.

“Take your time, drop your phone down for two, three hours, do mental note, put your head down, take a mental note or meditate,” she advised.

Her comments highlight concerns about how constant exposure to online content may affect independent thinking, self-awareness and personal development.

However, her remarks focus on the risks of excessive dependence on social media rather than suggesting that all online engagement is harmful.
